- April Foolish |
In
1957 the BBC reported that due to the elimination
of the spaghetti weevil farmers in Switzerland had
good crop this year. The broadcast showed women picking
spaghetti off trees. The station was flooded with
calls from viewers wondering how they could grow spaghetti. |

New Years Day was celebrated on April 1st and not January
1st. In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII modified the calendar,
and moved new years from April to January. Those who
continued to follow the old date were considered "April
fools". Eventually it became a day to play hoaxes
on intellectually challenged individuals sending them
impossible to complete chores, looking for things like
snipes or smoke weasels. Some of the most famous hoaxes
have been started by the mass media spreading a message
to unsuspecting listeners and readers.
This April 1st bring on the clowns. Invite them all
– Red Skelton, Groucho Marx, the Court Jester,
Bobo, Krusty the Clown. The list is infinite for not
only clowns will play the fools. Think of the possibilities
with politicians. Prepare a foolish menu. Start with
dessert and work backwards to the appetizers. Give
a foolish prize to anyone who tells a great joke or
pulls a surprising hoax. Just imagine.
